Global Connections: Take action for positive social change
Topic
Community Life – Sustainable Development:
Description: Using a combination of Skype and social networking, students will discuss specific issues of concern to them regarding sustainable development. The project will focus on two of the following topics: Water, Agriculture, Energy, Cities, or Disaster Resilience.
Goal
Collaboration Video Created with contributions from the different schools involved.
Students will be able to examine and express their own feelings while also learning how their peers in other countries view the world. Students will also think critically to find solutions to possible ‘problems’ that their peers have highlighted and also reinforce positive aspects that their peers have highlighted about their world today.

Project Posting Schedule
- Post photos with comments in the first week of the month.
- Present any thoughts you have relating to the 4 subtopics. Represent those thoughts in text or images and post in GG. Think about your own community and take pictures.
- Comment back for every school’s posts in the second week of the month.
- Respond to their thoughts by posting pictures you took on GG.
- Explain what is accurate and inaccurate about their thoughts.
- Share, compare, and discuss.
Reflect and give any specific feedback.
Project Schedule
1 - Students/teachers e-mail power point presentations of their traditional cultures. Students can also post images of their school life freely on the assigned group homepage on Going Global if they wish.
2 - Students upload a picture of a matter or situation that they would like to change or improve related to the topic of their choice (see above). They also add one or two sentences to clarify the situation and their feelings. Students should post the ideas directly on the homepage of the group
- Students seek possible solutions for the problems and reflect on their lives and communities; what can “we” do to make a change? Students share their ideas for how they can make a change. (Try to find a picture, as well, that represents a possible solution.) Reply with ideas and suggestions for solving the problem
3 – Students actually take actions in their communities through a service learning project.
- Post pictures of students carrying out different stages of their service project and share their experiences/thoughts with their corresponding school. (Teachers will set the dates for posting the progress of the projects.) Respond to the postings of the other school.
4 – Students will create a video to encourage a solution to the problem. Students at Lakeridge will create Public Service Advertisement (PSA). Students as Jiyu Gakuen will create a video based on their ideas.
